Tanzania — Women’s week
Every year starting 1st March is women’s week in Tanzania.
Upon arrival in Dar es Salaam this morning this raucous bunch we’re parading past the hotel on their way to the national stadium — a great example of the African vivacity which Julian Bedford has described. The bright dresses or kangas symbolise membership of an organisation of some kind. The placards are in Swahili but I’m told they are campaigning for more care for AIDS victims. Some estimates put the number of AIDS deaths in 2007 for Tanzania at 96,000. Compare this to the UK where in 2007, 7,734 were diagnosed merely as having contracted HIV.
